Long before forests transformed into national parks and sanctuaries, they were a realm for sages and kings. The mythological tales were not set against the backdrop of these forests; rather, they were born within them. The jungles of India are teeming with rare species and timeless myths. Shravan Tal
The legendary story of Shravan Kumar unfolded on a quiet lake in Kanha, by Shravan Tal. In Ramayana, Shravan selflessly carried his blind parents on a pilgrimage. When he was taking water from the lake, King Dasharatha, who was passing by, was under the misguided notion that there was prey. King Dasharatha fatally shot Shravan Kumar. His last words were a prophecy: one day, the king would experience grief over the loss of his son, Lord Rama, as he was exiled.
Today, the lake has witnessed tragedy and dharma silently. For visitors of Kanha National Park, the lake is a scenic and spiritual pause.
The Barasingha
The barasingha, also known as the swamp deer, was on the brink of extinction in the 1970s. They are a unique subspecies, locally called the “jewel of Kanha” and found only in the grasslands of Kanha National Park. The Gond and the Baiga tribal communities consider the deer to be sacred. Through careful conservation efforts combining science and tradition, the hard-ground barasingha were revived from a mere 70 to a thriving species of over 800.
Dandakaranya
Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent the majority of their time during exile in the Dandakaranya forest. This forest, in all its wild glory, is spread across Chitrakoot, Kanha, Tadoba, Pench and Nashik. In modern times, Dandakaranya’s physical lines have been erased, but its soul is still alive in its tiger trails, water features, and tribal songs. Gir
Gujarat’s Gir National Park is known as the last kingdom of lions. Once upon a time, the Asiatic lions used to wander from Iran to Madhya Pradesh in India. However, today, there are only 670 surviving lions living in Gir and its surrounding areas. In Indian mythology, lions are considered royalty. They are a symbol of strength, which is indicated in the Narasimha avatar, or the half-lion form of Lord Vishnu, as well as the ancient coins which have lion motifs on them.
Despite their emblem of strength and protection, the lions need shielding too. Dedication from local communities, conservationists and park officials has ensured their survival.
